Maersk Drilling restructures onshore organisation

14 January 2010

After a period of substantial growth, Maersk Drilling will focus on servicing the customers and the operational performance of the fleet. Having completed a major newbuilding programme, Maersk Drilling now operates the market's second newest fleet and the organisation needs to be restructured to meet the new priorities.

"Over the past five years we have ordered and taken delivery of a major newbuilding programme encompassing 9 drilling rigs, which required an organisation structured for growth. We are now entering a new phase. It is time to demonstrate the superiority of our equipment and to consolidate. We need a simpler organisation with fewer layers and operational responsibility anchored with the rig teams. This will facilitate a more efficient decision-making process and an improved service to our customers", says Claus V. Hemmingsen, CEO of Maersk Drilling.

There will be several changes to the organisation.

The new organisational set-up will be centred around rigs teams with a rig manager being overall responsible for the operation of the drilling rig and reporting directly to an Asset Manager in the head office. The structure of the head office will be reorganised to support the rig teams.

Also the management structure of the head office will change. The Senior Management Team will consist of six leaders, a reduction of three.

The new set-up means change to a number of activities which will impact the number of employees in Maersk Drilling’s onshore organisation where 522 positions will be reduced by around 100. The total number of employees in Maersk Drilling, including offshore positions, is approximately 3,150.

“Having to reduce the number of employees is regrettable, but nevertheless a step which I have found necessary to take to reduce complexity and to increase financial performance,” says Claus V. Hemmingsen.

In the coming weeks, the Senior Management Team will consult with an employee committee about redundancies, including compensation for the employees who will have to leave. The new organisation structure is expected to be finalised by the end of February.
